Buraka Som Sistema review on JC Report

Put A Record On: Buraka Som Sistema's Diamond In The Rough
November 24th, 2008 | Lisbon

Portugal and Angola may not be your first ports of call when looking for new and exciting music, but Lisbon-based Buraka Som Sistema has the sound to go with the uncharted musical territory. Named for the Angolan Kudoro word meaning "stiff butt," the Buraka Som Sistema crew knows how to put on a party with carnival-esque tunes that bring break beat back to club music.

In their bid for world dominance with album Black Diamond, BSS has enlisted the help of the stunningly loud, colorful and omnipresent MIA. Her hollering on the "Sound of Kudoro" track is not only the making of a high profile collaboration, but a voice that fits perfectly with the urban and fast-paced music of BSS.

Another guest vocalist is British rapper Kano, who perfectly illustrates BSS's hip-hop inspirations. Other influences include techno and drum 'n bass, as seen on first single "YAY," which has already done the rounds in the underground club scene. It's only a matter of time before BSS come up over ground as Kudoro becomes the soundtrack of our streets.
